Board approves bond and budget question for November 2008 election
After months of careful consideration, the Douglas County School District Board of Education decided Tuesday, August 19, at their regularly scheduled meeting, to place a $395 million bond and $17 million override measure on the November 4, 2008 ballot. The Board is asking Douglas County voters to approve a fixed 4 mil solution to provide much needed funding.
3A: A $17 million increase in the District’s operational budget to:
·maintain and improve student achievement
·recruit and retain the best work force
·maintain and improve technology at ALL schools
·respond to continued student enrollment growth
3B: A $395 million bond to:
·build 10 new elementary schools
·renovations, updates and repairs to almost 50 District schools
·improve technology infrastructure (Wide Area Network, wiring, etc.) and equipment
·strategically begin to move all elementary schools off 4-track

The combined cost of the fixed 4 mil bond and budget measure is 33 cents a day on the average Douglas County home valued at $372,000.

DCSD recently implemented a $21 million reduction to its 2008-09 budget. Without added funding, an additional $10 million in reductions will be required in the 2009-10 school year. Rising fuel costs, healthcare costs, utilities, the need to continue to build new schools, along with other factors, will limit our School District’s ability to fund programs and resources at the level we have in the past.
Additional funding will be necessary in order for DCSD to maintain its quality of public education. A high quality school district impacts all residents in a community.
